With the electronic devices becoming more widespread, we write lesser and lesser by hand, and most of the writing happens on a computer, phone or tablet. On a personal note, all my writing on devices was in English which meant that I was not writing in Hindi at all. This got to a point where I was starting to forget the basics of Hindi script altogether.  Apple added Hindi support in iOS 8 in 2014i [1] . However anecdotally, I don't see widespread usage. Only 0.1% of content languages for websites on the World Wide Web have content in Hindi [2] .  Infact folks have started writing Hindi using transliteration i.e. writing Hindi words using Latin character set on Chat apps  e.g. "Namaste 🙏. Aap sab kaise hain? Aur koi khaas khabar?”.  My goal with this blog is to enable the Hindi speakers to comfortably write in Hindi on their devices. There are two very different keyboards I have used to type in Hindi on your iPhone or iPad. The first one is  Devanagari ( Hindi) and the second one is Hindi - Transliteration (A → अ). Visit this page on instruction on how to enable them. Devanagari ( Hindi)  In this keyboard you directly type using the vyanjan (व्यंजन) and matras (मात्रा)। You will need to press the keys for additional options or ⬆️ to see additional aksharas (अक्षर). You do have access to spell check.  Hindi - Transliteration (A → अ) To use keyboard you basically start typing as though you are spelling the hindi words in english.  for e.g. hathi will be हाथी, bandar will be बंदर, shraddha will be श्रद्धा etc.  iOS will suggest the Hindi word options, and it helps choose the right one. To get started with writing in Hindi on your iPhone or iPad, the first step is to enable the keyboards.  Step by step instructions Go to the Home and click  Settings . Click General . Click Keyboard . Click Keyboards . Click Add New Keyboard. Enter "Hindi" in the search bar or scroll down and click Hindi (Note: not Hindi-Latin) . Select Hindi and Hindi - Transliteration (A → अ) .
